OUR IMPACT

LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW PRETORIA PROTEIN AIMS TO HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT.

our contribution

At Pretoria Protein, we are actively contributing to sustainable practices and growing the local economy. We are doing so in three ways; by being one of the first energy-neutral soybean crushing plants in South Africa, by improving employment rates with up to 600 jobs created during this project, and contributing to food security in local and international markets.

OUR CONTRIBUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY:

WE ARE ENERGY NEUTRAL

Pretoria Protein is establishing a self-sufficient soybean crushing plant in South Africa to reduce reliance on coal-generated electricity and lower carbon emissions. This aligns with our environmental goals while leveraging advancements in global energy technology. Current and potential future energy solutions include Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as well as Combined Heat and Power (CHP).

Compressed Natural Gas

CNG powers internal combustion engines. When burned in the engine, it generates heat, which drives the engine, to power an electrical generator. The generator is then directly connected to the power grid of the plant, providing a source of electricity.

Combined Heat and Power

CHP is a system that generates both electricity and useful heat simultaneously. Heat that is typically wasted during power generation is used to provide heating or cooling for buildings, industrial processes, or other applications for the plant.

Solar Panels

Solar panels harness energy from sunlight to generate a direct current. This is then converted into alternating current so that it can be seamlessly integrated into the power grid of the plant for immediate use.

improving employment rates with job creation

The unemployment rate in South Africa for Quarter 3 in 2022 was 33.56% increasing by 4.34% from 2020.

The unemployment rate increased by more than 10% in the last 12 years, and is estimated to increase to 38.64% in 2027.

The phased approach adopted by Pretoria Protein will create up to 600 permanent job opportunities, of which 80 will be in phase one, 200 in phase two, 120 in phase three, and 200 in the final phase.

Soybean Protein isolate (SPI)

WHY SPI?
The world’s population is expected to increase by 2 billion in the next 30 years. Africa is the fastest growing continent, with more than half of the global population growth estimated to occur in Africa. Due to malnutrition in Africa, 58.7 million adults will suffer from stunted growth.

SPI has a protein content of more than 90% and can be used to improve the texture of meat products, increase the protein content in other foods, enhance moisture retention, and be used as an emulsifier.

It can be used as a cost-effective food supplement to reduce malnutrition and food insecurity in South Africa, with the opportunity to do the same in the rest of the African continent.
